合氣的解釋假說
技術深奧而所知有限,僅能就我有限知識去揣測,並且避免從精神性或透過其他武術的解釋(註)去揣摩"合氣是什麼?",佐川宗範能夠將人類如同濕抹布一樣的投擲在地上,甚至可以在多人將他架高狀態下,讓所有人瞬間潰散摔倒,所涉及的深層技術已非吾人所能想像,以下僅從基本層面的認知試圖拆解合氣,故假說僅供參考。
根據承受合氣技術的體驗,幾個特徵如下:
無法脫手、速度很快、從臀腰開始潰勢且摔的很難看、如同撞上一堵牆、
接著,從這些特徵,反推合氣可能的面貌及所需要的能力:
無法脫手:施展技術者的接觸點放鬆而黏著,實際上是施展技術者的接觸點一直跟著移動,產生難以脫手的錯覺,另一點是,施展技術者的接觸點跟受者之間密合且不產生壓力,以至於無法脫開;所以施術者的手需要很放鬆足以貼著對方。
速度很快:人類的大腦依賴觸覺跟肌肉反射,認知自己是否失去平衡,如果皮膚及肌肉反射尚未發覺異狀但身體平衡已經改變,等到大腦意識到時已經太晚,所以使用合氣破壞平衡時,必須讓觸覺跟肌肉無違和感;所以施術者對於自己手的控制要非常少,且不能讓對方感受到。
從臀腰開始潰勢且摔的很難看(難以受身):同前,當受者上身的平衡被感變,但大腦尚未反應過來使得上身已經重心偏移但下半身還停留在原處,所以從臀腰開始潰勢;施術者的輸出必須是均速或變化曲線平滑,讓受者的身體欺騙大腦而沒有意識到失衡。
如同撞上一堵牆:施術者非常穩定,且透過傳導的手臂,讓受者無以撼動;施術的軀幹是穩定的,且手跟軀幹一樣穩定,受者的力量想要抵抗的力因為發生在接觸點(手部),但施術者讓驅幹穩定且手臂跟軀幹協調而一樣也是穩定。
關於抗力:一般對於抵抗的想法,就是哪裡有力量,就從哪裡推回去,因此接觸點就是抗力點,也就是抵抗回去的支撐點,如果支撐點跟我們發力點是不同的呢?或是不給予抵抗的支撐點呢?
關於筋膜:就我淺薄理解,筋膜是包覆在肌肉外層的一層膜,受到外在壓力或是神經傳導訊號而收縮或鬆弛,影響肌肉的緊繃或放送,(wiki說法:筋膜是被動傳導機械張力的結構),肌肉跟筋膜密切關聯,當人體皮膚受到壓力而改變表面張力時,會讓筋膜收縮而讓肌肉緊繃(例如,按摩技術不好而過度按壓造成筋膜收縮,反而讓肌肉更加緊繃),合氣的可能技術之一,或許就是在不刺激筋膜跟肌肉的前提,欺騙受者的大腦認知而延遲反應時間?
大東流的技術是用各種技術,例如關節鎖,讓對手身體緊繃,同時自己要維持放鬆狀態,合氣技術在此之上,先用某些手段,不論是關節伸展極限或是讓關節之間的緊密連接的瞬間,讓對手身體緊繃成一塊且自己身體維持放鬆狀態,然後將對手的身體塊輕輕推動到失去平衡,上述一連串過程精煉到瞬間發生,我推論是合氣的雛形。
另一個特點是,讓受者維持可以抵抗的狀態,將此抗力的狀態整體視為一個基座,把基座往上往下或是往切線方向移動,讓受者倒地時仍在維持抵抗的狀態但下半身的平衡已經被奪去,要實現這點,必須是施術者的身體是靈活可動狀態,才能隨時應變,同時不讓受者被平推移動而被破壞平衡。
註1:用西瓜的味道來解釋蘋果的風味是非常不恰當的揣摩,用精神或空泛方式來解釋只會讓原本複雜的事物更加難懂,下盤包括下肢、臀、腰,不等於丹田。
Hypothetical Explanation of Aiki
The techniques of Aiki are profound, and our knowledge is limited. I can only speculate based on my constrained understanding, while avoiding interpretations rooted in spirituality or through the lens of other martial arts (Note 1) to address the question, "What is Aiki?" Sagawa Yukiyoshi could throw people to the ground as if they were wet rags or cause multiple people holding him aloft to collapse instantly. The depth of such techniques is beyond our imagination. The following is an attempt to deconstruct Aiki from a basic level of understanding, and this hypothesis is offered merely for reference.
Based on the experiences of those subjected to Aiki techniques, several characteristics emerge:
- Inability to break free: The contact point feels inescapable.
- High speed: The technique is executed very quickly.
- Collapse starting from the hips and waist, resulting in an ungainly fall: The fall is difficult to recover from gracefully.
- Like hitting a wall: The technique feels like an immovable force.
From these characteristics, we can infer the possible nature of Aiki and the abilities required:
- **Inability to break free**: The practitioner’s contact point is relaxed yet adhesive, constantly moving with the recipient, creating the illusion of inescapability. Additionally, the contact point adheres closely to the recipient without generating pressure, making it impossible to disengage. Thus, the practitioner’s hand must be extremely relaxed to maintain this close adherence.
- **High speed**: The human brain relies on tactile sensation and muscle reflexes to recognize loss of balance. If the skin and muscles do not detect anything unusual, but the body’s balance has already shifted, by the time the brain registers it, it’s too late. When disrupting balance with Aiki, the practitioner must ensure that tactile and muscular sensations remain seamless, so the recipient feels no disruption. This requires the practitioner to exert minimal control over their hand and avoid letting the recipient sense any disturbance.
- **Collapse starting from the hips and waist, resulting in an ungainly fall (difficult to breakfall)**: As mentioned, when the recipient’s upper body balance is disrupted but the brain has not yet reacted, the upper body’s center of gravity shifts while the lower body remains in place, leading to a collapse starting from the hips and waist. The practitioner’s output must be at a consistent speed or follow a smooth curve of variation, tricking the recipient’s body into deceiving the brain so it does not register the loss of balance.
- **Like hitting a wall**: The practitioner is extremely stable, and through the conducting arm, the recipient feels an unyielding force. The practitioner’s torso is stable, and their hand is as steady as their torso. The recipient’s attempt to resist occurs at the contact point (the hand), but the practitioner’s stable torso and coordinated arm maintain equal stability.
**Regarding resistance**: The common notion of resistance is to push back against force at the point of application, making the contact point the fulcrum of resistance. But what if the fulcrum and the point of force application are different? Or what if no fulcrum for resistance is provided at all?
**Regarding fascia**: Based on my limited understanding, fascia is a membrane enveloping muscles, contracting or relaxing in response to external pressure or neural signals, affecting muscle tension or relaxation. (Wikipedia describes fascia as a structure that passively conducts mechanical tension.) Muscles and fascia are closely interconnected. When the skin experiences pressure that alters surface tension, it causes the fascia to contract, leading to muscle tension. (For example, poor massage techniques that apply excessive pressure can cause fascia to contract, making muscles even tenser.) One possible Aiki technique might involve bypassing stimulation of the fascia and muscles, tricking the recipient’s brain into delayed recognition and response.
Daito-ryu techniques use various methods, such as joint locks, to induce tension in the opponent’s body while the practitioner remains relaxed. Aiki builds on this: through certain means—whether pushing joints to their limits or creating an instantaneous tight connection between joints—the opponent’s body becomes rigid as a single block, while the practitioner remains relaxed. The practitioner then gently nudges this rigid block to disrupt balance. This refined process, executed in an instant, is what I hypothesize as the prototype of Aiki.
Another characteristic is maintaining the recipient in a state where they can resist, treating this state of resistance as a single base. By moving this base upward, downward, or tangentially, the recipient falls while still in a resistive state, but their lower body’s balance has already been compromised. To achieve this, the practitioner’s body must be flexible and adaptable, able to respond instantly while ensuring the recipient is not simply pushed flat, which would disrupt their balance prematurely.
**Note 1**: Explaining the flavor of an apple by describing the taste of a watermelon is a highly inappropriate analogy. Using spiritual or vague terms to explain Aiki only makes an already complex subject more obscure. The lower body, including the legs, hips, and waist, is not equivalent to the “dantian.”
